چکیده

The bulge is a region of the Galaxy of tremendous interest for understanding galaxy formation. However measuring photometry and kinematics in it raises several inherent issues, such as severe crowding and high extinction in the visible. Using the Besançon Galaxy model and a 3D extinction map, we estimate the stellar density as a function of longitude, latitude and apparent magnitude and we deduce the possibility of reaching and measuring bulge stars with Gaia. We also present an ongoing analysis of the bulge using the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope.

UKIRT MICROLENSING SURVEYS AS A PATHFINDER FOR WFIRST: THE DETECTION OF FIVE HIGHLY EXTINGUISHED LOW-∣b∣ EVENTS

Optical microlensing surveys are restricted from detecting events near the Galactic plane and center, where the event rate is thought to be the highest due to the high optical extinction of these fields. In the near-infrared (NIR), however, the lower extinction leads to a corresponding increase in event detections and is a primary driver for the wavelength coverage of theWFIRSTmicrolensing surv...

Champlane Deep Galactic Bulge Survey. I. Faint Accretion-driven Binaries in the Limiting Window

We have carried out a deep X-ray and optical survey with Chandra and HST of low-extinction regions in the Galactic bulge. Here we present the results of a search for low-luminosity (LX . 1034 ergs s−1) accreting binaries among the Chandra sources in the region closest to the Galactic Center, at an angular offset of 1.4, that we have named the Limiting Window. Based on their blue optical colors,...

The MACHO Project: 45 Candidate Microlensing Events from the First Year Galactic Bulge Data

We report the detection of 45 candidate microlensing events in fields toward the Galactic bulge. These come from the analysis of 24 fields containing 12.6 million stars observed for 190 days in 1993. Many of these events are of extremely high signal to noise and are remarkable examples of gravitational microlensing. The distribution of peak magnifications is shown to be consistent with the micr...

The visibility of the Galactic bulge in optical surveys . Application to the Gaia mission

The bulge is a region of the Galaxy which is of tremendous interest for understanding Galaxy formation. However, measuring photometry and kinematics in it raises several inherent issues, like high extinction in the visible and severe crowding. Here we attempt to estimate the problem of the visibility of the bulge at optical wavelengths, where large CCD mosaics allow to easily cover wide regions...

Near-infrared counterparts to the Galactic Bulge Survey X-ray source population

We report on the near-infrared matches, drawn from three surveys, to the 1640 unique X-ray sources detected by Chandra in the Galactic Bulge Survey (GBS). This survey targets faint X-ray sources in the Bulge, with a particular focus on accreting compact objects. We present all viable counterpart candidates and associate a false alarm probability (FAP) to each near-infrared match in order to ide...
